Opting out from Twitter’s Promoted Ads

Believe it or not, Twitter has ads. Of course, these ads are hidden at plain sight as tweets. Of course, these have a “Promoted by @USERNAME” tag that will let you know that the tweet is not necessarily from a account your follow, but instead is from a account that just want followers.

This is not a bad thing since Twitter is free and they need to make a living somehow, but since this “personalization” (as they call it) works by tracking you and your browsing habits, I don’t think that is good to keep it on if you’re concerned about your privacy, and it’s actually pretty easy to disable.

Go to your Twitter account, and they into settings (<= click it). Scroll down, you’ll see a “Tailor ads based on information shared by ad partners”. Uncheck it and click Save at the bottom of the page.

That’s it, Twitter will no longer show promoted ads in your account. While you’re there check if you’re being tracked. If you are, here are some tools to help you with that.
